During his first participation in Çare Doctors’ medical camp in Uganda, Dr. İlker Yalçın experienced one of the most touching moments of his life. As an ophthalmologist, he had performed numerous surgeries, but the patient he encountered this time showed him once again that he was in the right place.
During the camp, Dr. Yalçın and his team met a middle-aged man who had almost completely lost his vision and arrived with a cane. The man’s vision loss was due to cataracts, a treatable condition. However, due to the lack of adequate healthcare services in the region, even this simple surgery had not been possible. Despite years of blindness, the man had clung to life with patience.
Dr. Yalçın decided to perform surgery on the man. The operation was successful, and his eyes were once again exposed to light. After the surgery, the man realized that he needed his cane less and, with tears in his eyes, thanked Dr. Yalçın. This seemingly simple intervention had completely transformed his life and given him new hope.
Dr. İlker Yalçın expressed that this camp was not just a medical duty but one of the most beautiful ways to serve humanity. The poverty in Yumbe, the people's devoutness, and their patience and contentment despite harsh living conditions left a profound impact on Dr. Yalçın. The story of the man with the cane deepened his connection to Yumbe even further. Now, he is eager to return to this region and help more people.
This story will remain one of the most unforgettable moments in Dr. İlker Yalçın’s professional life. It is a vivid example of how a simple surgery performed by an ophthalmologist can change a life.
